Public Education needs to be strengthened and funding needs to be increased. Our community here in Marion County relies on the institution of public education. Our three high schools are the centers of activity for students and parents alike, whether that be fine arts programs that gift students new and exciting opportunities, sports teams that instill a sense of school pride, or academic achievements that foster a sense of accomplishment and self-worth. They are safe havens for students who need love, support, and guidance.
Charter Schools have no place here. Education is a right, not a money making scheme for our legislators.
Educators are worthy. They are highly educated professionals and we need to treat them as such. No cuts to their healthcare. No cuts to their salary.
Teacher Unions are vital to giving educators a valued voice and we can’t keep undermining them. Striking should not be banned. It gives we the people leverage over out of state special interests like the Koch brothers and ALEC.
Every child deserves something to eat regardless of family circumstances. For many children their only meal is what they are given at school. We need to expand upon programs that provide children with food to take after school or for the weekend.
College is not affordable for the majority of students and many of them, and subsequently their families, suffer financial hardships to pay for a degree that is necessary to have in this new day and age. Everyone deserves an education regardless of income. We need to move towards tuition free college for our in-state students. Imagine if Fairmont State instituted that. Many students would be ecstatic to be able to get the degree they want and only have to worry about minor expenses. We would see a more educated population and a possible retention of young people.
Trade Schools should be emphasized more than they currently are. Our young population is not flooding the coal mines like past generations were. They are flocking to either other states or having to find a job that is offered here which can be difficult since we aren’t a booming tech state or a huge agriculture state. Trade schools offer useful skilled training for jobs that will always be needed and we need to advertise them more. A lot of kids choose to go to college because they are presented solely with that option, but we need to tell them that they have multiple viable options.
